55409 "John H. Lederer" <johnl@i...> Jan-02-1999 Holding fast

My work area is the bottom of my workbench to be.

I have drilled four 3/4" holes in the bottom, two deep holes, and two holes all
the way through
(5.5"). To hold things I put pegs in the holes and use wedges. The holes are
in a square 6"x12"
save that one hole is offset by an additional 4".

This works surprisingly well, but as I was wedging last night it occurred to me
that I doing most of
my work between the holes 6" apart and the most common set up I had was a board
on its narrow side
wedged between the two holes.
Any other good suggestions for holding material without any apparatus beyond
the holes and simple
home made things to go in the holes? I have a holdfast on the way, but I see it
as having limited
applicability.

I don't want to drill many holes, as eventually the bench will be turned over
and new holes drilled
in a more normal pattern.

Though wedging works pretty well, my biggest problem is when I am doing the
narrow side of a board
6" or wider. The plane on the board develops enough leverage force that it
tends to lift the back
end of the board up.
