55393 tom thornton <tomthornton@n...> Jan-01-1999 Rust checking

Mebby this has been mentioned, but I recently finished a search at a
old furniture warehouse. Turned up 5 fully rusted planes, at 2.00
each which was fine with me. I left all the woodes cause they all
seemed to have the irons missing.

I have learned to spot a grinder crank from 50 feet, look for the
base clamp then the round stone and bingo, but alas all the cranks
had the hoppers of the food grinders, gad there are a lot of them.

In the poor light, on the fully rusted, bench planes I have concluded,
- If it has a lateral adjustment lever,
and the lever has a half round knob on the end its probably a Stanley.
- If the lever is one piece with the end stamped into a Vee
its probably a Sargent, or mebby a Defiance.
- If the lever is straight bar, bent up 90 degrees then a quarter
turn its a off brand, tho de-rusting might reveal a Stanley cutter.
