The Garrett Wade adz can be used for carving but is not right for Windsor
chair seats
the way Mike does them, i.e., you can use it but then you can use a gouge
too,
the Barr
adz is a good un, but better and less expensive is one made by a galoot, Ray
Larsen,
at Genuine Forgery, 1126 Broadway, Hangover, MA 02339, (781) 826-8931 -- and
he saves
you the trouble of shortening the handle. Ray makes several other useful
tools also,
draw knives, scorps, travisher and spokeshave blades, and a pommel knife.
The
pommel knife is a draw knife with one handle out straight for getting in
close
in those inconvenient tight spots where a drawknife just won't cut it.
(Salaman's
Dictionary of tools calls it a cooper's chamfering and howeling knife. If
you
order a drawknife from Ray, specify whether you want a Mike Dunbar style or
Drew Langsner. :-) )
