Hey hey,
Lets just test our new water with a (hopefully) more than just a WTB
I'm needing some felt to line the drawers of a toolbox. I'm not sure
exactly what was/is used for this felt, so this is a troll for
knowledge as well as a WTB.
   What Say?
      yours
       Scott

     Hi Scott

Pool tables are covered with a very high quality felt. It is available
in several colors and weights and with or without backing. It is expensive
but will last. Look in the phone book under pool tables, games, vending and
game machines, billiard parlors.

Hey hey, yourself.

Go to your nearest pool and billiards table dealer to get the quality
felt you need for lining tool drawers. By the way, I prefer to use
sheet cork, but then I live in a dry climate where there is no chance
of any tannic acid staining.

I hate to be a wet blanket here, but real felt is made from wool,
not cotton.

Mcmaster also carries a wool felt but not self adhesive.
What makes wool felt "real" and cotton not?

right! And the natural oils (lanolin, etc) in real felt is what makes it
desireable for metal stuff to rest on.

Does virgin wool come
from really ugly sheep?-)

49984 Michael Horgan <Lughaid@p...> Sep-17-1998 Re: WTB some felt

Wool is the original felt, and is much stronger than the artificial fibers
or cotton. The natural fibers in wool are somewhat scaly. When pounded
together while wet, these scales interlock, making a felted mass, which can
be shaped however you want. Many other fibers require a chemical
treatment to "OPEN UP" the fiber to allow it to felt. These chemicals
leaching out of the felt later can cause corrosion. Natural wool felt will
also have traces of lanolin , the oil that comes from the wool as grown on
the sheep, which will help to retard rust in your toolbox.

And be careful of stuff sold in fabric stores. I called five of
them in Tucson a while back, and none of them sells felt which doesn;t
have a quite high content of synthetics (i.e. polyester). Polyester is
quite abrasive, and not the bst stuff for setting and sliding treasured
tools on.

the way the ?mongoloids? nomaidc asians etc made felt for their yurts (
tents) was to boil the wool ( not necesarily just sheep ) and pile it in
great thick layers on wooden platforms and weighted on top. this whole
mess was then dragged behind horses to create the vibration.

these thick sheets were then used to make tents etc, and proved to be
quite windproof and had good water wicking capabilities leaving them
pretty dry and warm in the COLD winters.

I have helped Swmbo do some felting (alpacca yarn) and it is quite fun!

Aaron taak FWW etc, etc,

p.s. I will repost the FWW message from a year ago :) for those of you
who do not have or get FWW
