49563 "Tom O'Neil" <toneil@c...> Sep-11-1998 Shooting Board

I promised myself I wasn't going to ask a question that has probably
been asked a gazillion times already but no matter how hard I looked I
could not find plans on how to make a shooting board or even a good
picture of one so I could try to copy it. Can anyone recommend a
source for information on how to make one and the proper technique to
join a board with one. Currently I am doing it free hand and it aint
   working out so well.

   Thanks in advance.

Yep. a plan (not just a picture), with dimensions and 3-D views,
can be found in Aldren Watson, HAND TOOLS, THEIR WAYS AND WORKINGS, (NY,
Lyons and Burford, 1996, ISBN 1-55821-224-8) p. 400. The description and
tips on use are on pp. 199-200. This book, BTW, was originally published
by Norton in 1982. I found the reprint in Barnes and Noble sometime in the
past year. It has a lot of galootinous information, and clear plans for
several benches, jigs and fixtures for hand tool use, along with a lot
about the tools themselves.

This book is available from a number of sources. Amazon.com lists it at
$17.56 in paperback. Ships in 24 hours. I bought my copy at Barnes and
Noble.

I love this book. Few well chosen words. Lots of excellent pictures and
plans for all the necessary jigs. It is THE book for newby galoots IMHO.
Run don't walk to get this book.

No affiliation etc., etc., etc.

Hi Tom-

I used the plans in the back of Aldren W. Watson's "Hand Tools,
their ways and workings" with good success, and I'm a rank
beginner at this stuff.

However, I use mine mostly to square end grain, not for jointing.

One thing- make sure that the plane you are using is square to the
bottom on the side that slides on the board. I know it's obvious, but I
know at least one person that forgot about this...
