However, subsequently encouraged by the #7 I thought I would get a Stanley #4 smoother ("Contractor grade -made in England).The sole was way out of wack and took me more hours to lap flat than I care to remember.The rest of the plane -frog supports,face of frog,squareness of mouth etc.,etc., were also all very poor.It was a good lesson in learning to tune up a plane though. One thing that still bothers me with that plane is the width of the mouth on the sole - much ,much wider than the early #3,#3c and #5 Stanley planes I now possess. I hear that Stanley now only belt sand their planes and I guess some of the other fixes above can be described as seconds at outlet stores.(Would I have received a better quality version via W@d... G@r... - does anyone know? Not that I'll buy new again though). Maybe,I really found the wide mouth frog from my 3Yr old son's book!!! Best wishes to everyone, Phil.
