I'm afraid that 3/8" is typical for hand cranked grinders. I bought some
plastic tubing with a 3/8" ID and 1/16" wall thickness at Home Depot. It
was in the plumbing dept. However, since the grinding wheel is really
held in place with the flange washers and nut, the bushing doesn't really
need to have any real strength, especially on a hand cranked grinder. I
have since found that fiberglass reinforced packing tape works just fine.
I wind it around the shaft until the grinding wheel (plus 1/2" bushing)
fits well. The tape 'shim' needs to be narrower than the width of the
grinding wheel so that the shim does not interfere with the flanges.
