My mother's "significant other" has just informed me that he has "some
old woodworking tools - planes and stuff" in the slovenly pile of
apparent trash that he calls a garage.
He apparently bought a box full of stuff for a few dollars TWENTY-THREE
YEARS AGO at a garage sale, and has never touched any of it, being that
he is totally non-handy in any way (we're talking complete and utter
tool dyslexia here - can't imagine why he bought them in the first
place).
When I asked him if he'd be willing to part with them, and could I see
them, he dug around a bit and came up with a few. He said that when he
could, he'd get them all out.
Here's what he produced for me to look at:
1. Small, delicate-looking wooden spokeshave. About 8 in. total length.
Could just barely make out
******ce Inc.
53 Chambers St
York
2. Small chisel - about 1/8" curved gouge. Octagonal handle. Shaft bears
PS J.Addis
14 England
3. Small chisel - about 3/16" straight edge - bevel both sides.
Octagonal handle. Can't quite make it out, says something like
RERRADOCKS (?)
4. Small chisel - 1/2" straight edge - bevel both sides. Cutting end
flares outward to 1/2" from narrower shaft, bevel both sides. Shaft says
Herring Bros.
London England
5. Small chisel - 1/4" curved gouge. Shaft says
5 Herring Bros
6. My favorite (of what he produced so far) - Rather beefy wooden
spokeshave with captured brass adjusting nuts, and brass sole. The only
mark on the whole thing is "W.J." in a triangle, sort of like:
^
/
/
/ W.J.
/_______
All tools are in very good condition, and appear to be very slightly
used.
Any ideas on value of any of these? I don't want to rob him blind, and
he said he'd give me a good price, but I don't want to feel like I'm
buying from a dealer...
Any info is much appreciated!
Thanks!
