I'm certainly no expert, but what I found is that I had to slide the
blade side-to-side, *NOT* front to back as I sharpen.  Since the bottom
of the blade also acts as the sole of the shave you have to be *very* careful
not to round over the edge, or else the edge will never make contact with the
wood.  I found that if I stroked the blade front to back on my stones I would
tend to roll the blade and round over the cutting edge.

After flattening the bottom I used a small stone to clean up the bevel on the
inside.
