257021 kurt schmitz 2015‑11‑23 Hinges. Okay, Very Specific Hinges
Gentle Galoots (Assembled);
I'm putting the final touches on a simple project, namely my representation of a
Stanley #801 toolbox. The problem is one of hardware. The hinges on this beast
are very unique, and many hours of interwebz sleuthing have gotten me nothing
but heartache.
Metal work, while quite galootish in nature, is not something I aspire to do at
all. So the question I'm asking is directed at those who would know the
specifics of the box itself: Is there anyone out there who has liberated hinges
from a Stanley #801 or #888 box and would be interested in parting with them, or
know of a source that carries these modified strap hinges?
Again, a very focused question but one I had to ask The Porch before exercising
other (less optimal) options.

Are these simple enough to duplicate?

I've never seen an #801 toolbox, and my internet skills are admittedly
limited. Are there pictures available?

Heavens above...
We rarely see them in OZ.
However, there were two of those tool chests for sale at our last HTPAA
tool sale early in November.
One in fantastic condition, and another less so...both were priced VERY
cheap.
MickD...do you recall, they were next to your table.?? Under AU$100 I
think. ... About AU$75.00 = not much in US$
Since I'm not collecting Stanley stuff, and not accumulating to on-sell
.... I let them go. BIG MISTAKE!.....
I know the better one was bought by one of the dealers, and he was VERY
happy with his purchase.

Here is a sold one from the web.

You could get them duplicated by a custom blacksmith if you have an
example, but I suspect it would cost you dear.

Making them from scratch would be tricky, but cutting, filing and bending them
from a well chosen donor hinge doesn't look too hard.

The photos and measurements from the eBay listing that Peter McBride pointed
to would provide enough info, if interpreted carefully.

This is the closest I can find:

Too many drilled holes, and would need bending.

Saying............. that you want hinges, except you want original?
Only you know they are hard to get. (and they are)
And you don't want to pay a professional blacksmith a high price to
make you some.
But you don't want to do any metalwork?

Somethin' has got to give. Nobody gets to ask so much and get away
with it.

You are either going to have to pay a high price for originals
     or
Pay a high price for custom
     or
break down and do some simple metalwork!

Cause you can't have it all you know.
What did you think this was, the internet? heeheheheheeheh

Ordinary 6" gate T-hinges are easy to get. Probably even the
precious Chinese warehouse store. ugh
Get a couple pair and soak them in mild acid to take off the
zinc, so they don't look new new new
Then make a paper template (trace around the hinge) and draw your
decorative pattern. You will have to make one up to fit the occasion, so
make it cool. Start with a centerline and go from there.
Zerox the pattern 4 times. Cut them out and glue them to your hinges.

Remove all the metal that the template does not cover, with big
files followed by smaller files.
Sand the hinges clean down though a couple/three grits, and then
use gunsmiths cold blue solution until you get a nice even "dark gray"
(cold blue)

You'll be done in a few hours.
              yours Scott

Some choices available at Lee Valley also. I found some forged ones there-
ie options that would work without too much fettling.

Wow, love how the T part of the hinge is shaped liked the future Stanley
logo.

Fun shape in the whole thing, good luck with that, Kurt

I think thin cheap (stamped) hinges would work better - to match
the 801, any flat hinge needs a 90 degree bend
putting in.
