256605 "T.J. Mahaffey" <tj@t...> 2015‑10‑10 Tool Cabinet Finally Finished
I built this tool cabinet several years ago. It sat only partly filled: drawers
with smalls in them, plus my larger bench planes and a cubby hole box (which I
was never really happy with) for block planes.

I experimented in recent years with different ways to hang tools inside the
doors, but was never happy with them. Partly because i could never get them
attached firmly to the door while the door was in the hung position.

Anyway, a month or so ago, I had the idea to cut panels for the inside of the
doors. This way, I could mount the fixtures onto the panel as it was laid on my
bench. Then, just insert the panel into the door when finished. This worked much
better for my purposes.

Lastly, I had started this cabinet with the intentions of only using brass
screws and to drive them only with a brace or by hand. However, after 5+ years
of the cabinet sitting largely idle and not doing what it was mostly made for, I
decided not to worry about "purity" so much and just get the thing into working
order so I could use it.

I can finally say that I have now done that and I feel it can now help
facilitate other projects as designed.

Thanks for looking.

Nice looking cabinet.  Appears to be very functional too.  Guess I'm going to
have to do something about mine.  Why do the projects that support our other
projects take so long to get done?

TJ

What are the outside dimensions of the basic box? And the depth of the box and
of the doors? I was intrigued that the Studley box had stuff hung on both sides
of some of the of the swinging panels

Bravo for both overcoming inertia and doing a job well!

The three hardest things to make in your shop are time, space and money.

Thanks, everyone, for your compliments.

Ed, the outside dimensions are:

49-1/2" wide
36" tall
11" deep

The room inside the doors is 1-3/4” usable, which takes the 1/2” plywood panel
into account.

Also, here is a closed shot:

I must say that one of the best features of my cabinet as it sits today was the
addition of the simple walnut shelf that sits above the drawers. It's not
attached, so I can pull it out and rework it, if I want to. The three tiers of
open surface have been more useful than the 8 small cubbies I had before. The
open surface doesn't pose a dust problem as long as I close the doors. :P
