... my linenfold panel chest, that is! I finally completed the chest I have been labouring over the last couple of weeks. The box is constructed of white pine, finished with shellac. The pine was chosen for the carcass because the panels were already carved of pine and a friend gave me a big pile of pine for free just as I was about to embark on this project. I will not deny serendipity. This was constructed as a kitchen gear storage box for our trip to Pennsic War XLIV (gv)[*]. And it was only because I already had the panels mostly done that I followed through with the project. Lots of learning, and lots of re-learning on this project. It's the re-learning that hurts. Ed and all you others who wondered what kind of "pine" I had access to up in the Great White North: For me it is just plain old Eastern White Pine. There are still some pretty big trees around, although the large clear boards do command a hefty price. I picked up a lift of 4/4 12" wide white pine a few years ago at an auction. It was about 75 cents (CAD) per board foot, but all the pieces were 6 feet long. I can't count the number of times I said ARRGH and drove off to the lumber store for a longer stick. None of the boards were clear, but many had only a few widely spaced knots. When making the panels I just cut a hunk of cardboard to the desired size and laid that on the planks as a cutting guide to lay out the blanks. It did make for some waste but I got nice clear stock for my panels. One thing for sure, pine is a challenge to carve. Your gouges have to be VERY sharp to make clean cuts. The rest of the construction was easy, mortices are a breeze, planes leave a crisp smooth surface. And now it's gonna be bashed and bumped and dented and scratched, but that's what I made it for. Darrell that chest weighs a lot now that its full of gear! > On Jul 29, 2015, at 7:05 PM, Darrell & Kathy |
