255439 Anthony Seo <tonyseo@p...> 2015‑07‑17 Summer 2015 Jacktown Steam Engine Show & Flea Market
This morning kicked off the summer Steam Engine Show and flea market at
Jacktown. Unlike the spring event which is all flea market, this is a
mix of show and flea market, and also goes for 3 days rather than 2. I
crawled out (way too damn early BTW), found some road coffee and hit the
road. I got there around 6:30AM with the place lightly covered in fog
and with not too many dealers open. But slowly and surely things picked
up although it cloudy and damp the whole time. A least there was no mud!

Couple of pics of the flea market area, early and in the fog

Overall pickings were decent for the time and money spent. The Stanley
pickings included a No. 80 cabinet scraper, a Type 11 No, 3 smoother
plane, a No. 42X saw set that needs the anvil and screw (which I think I
still have from a basket case one), a 6" Rule & Level bevel square, a
minty No. 49 auger bit gage, and a No. 151 adjustable spoke shave.

http://oldetoolshop.com/jointer/bffiles/2015/jacktownsummer2015t1.jpg

Dunlap 8" draw knife, a long and well made machinist tapered reamer,
long and skinny blacksmith tongs, pair cabinet maker's turnscrews to
restore, and a Wostenholm & Son IXL stag handled dagger.

http://oldetoolshop.com/jointer/bffiles/2015/jacktownsummer2015t2.jpg

Cobblers No. 3 lasting pliers, Alford Patent Millers Falls No. 1 hand
vise, a C Hammond No. 1 cobbler's hammer, pair Starrett No. 298
Machinist key seat clamps, a penny knife made in Austria, German
jeweler's hand vise, leather lacing slitter shave, small scraper blade
burnisher, 6" Perfect Handle screwdriver, and a pair of Starrett tool
maker's calipers.

Not a massive pile but reasonable overall. Depending on the weather
(which seems to be targeting my flea market days here for the past
month..grrrrrrr) I may go back for a clean up pass tomorrow after the
flea market.

But we shall see

Tony (in serious need of sleep and new knees..)

Tony,
The winners seem to be the Alford hand vise and the two classic "turnscrews".
At least, that's what floats my boat, YMMV.

The Starrett stuff and the shop-made machinist reamer aren't too shabby, either.

Made me want to drive over to Bangor PA......but I'm already backlogged with
restorations. Besides, I'm sure you got all the good stuff!

Well I missed out a bunch of good Starrett, this old guy showed up and
emptied out 2 machinists chests at pennies on the dollar prices but I
got there 5 minutes too late...grrrrrrrrrrrr

Bangor? I don't even know her! (Local radio joke...)

There were a number of empty spots and a few of the regular's weren't
there but I sort of doubt with the "60% chance of the world coming to an
end" forecast for tomorrow that they will be showing up.

Tony (but who knows eh? And it is a fun place to visit)

The few I’ve managed to show my old tractor at, the people show up at daylight
and start setting up. Stragglers drift in from dawn until noon. First come
first served so the late ones end up in the swamp or woods.

Well there are people there starting Wednesday and over 1/2 of the flea
market area was up and running on Thursday. I'm sure after all these
years they have a system for herding cats as well as tractors.

Much as I would have liked to be there on Thursday, vendors come in all
day and well, I just can't justify setting around doing nothing all day
in the hopes of snagging something good. Plus it's only a 45 mile ride
one way, but it's an hour:15 run during dawn's early
light, but after
that, add on average another 1/2 hour due to traffic. Sigh....

Got rained out this AM for the most part. I had just enough time to
check out the one regular at the flea market who I usually do okay with
before it seriously cut loose. The ride back here was an adventure to
say the least, as the one road I take probably had better drainage 150
years ago when it was a stagecoach route than it does these days!

> I want the knife

Yeah, I'm having some trouble pricing that guy, doesn't seem like they
made too many of them and even fewer have shown up for sale. The most
common Wostenholm & Son dagger has brass handle and that brings some
serious coinage. But I'm sure I'll figure something out

Tony (just having all kinds of fun eh?)

Hey, Bill ! I hadn't thought of that classic OLDTOOLS post in years! IIRC, it's
got to be a caterpillar-tracked steam tractor with a brass whistle.

Oh, I suppose the newer members of the list would like a pointer to the story,
but I can't find one.

There was an almost universal gut reaction that that's what would happen to each
and every one of us if we ever tried to bid on something like that with SWMBO
present!

'It was, on close examination, a steam tractor. Not just any steam
tractor, but a caterpillar treaded steam tractor, slightly larger than
our apartment."

" It had, I suddenly noticed, a whistle."
