255304 Don Schwartz <dks@t...> 2015‑07‑02 Woodwright's Shop at local library?
A few months ago, I was bemoaning the fact I didn't have access to the
DVD series of St.Roy's shows. But I contacted the local public library,
and they have now purchased 2 copies of the complete series. Woohoo!

Like I needed another craft reason to be sad I don't live in the US, our
libraries here would never have heard of him so are unlikely, unprompted
to go out and make such a purchase.

That's exactly what I did - prompt them by submitting a purchase suggestion.

It's worth a try, I wonder if I put a link to some of his videos on
youtube in the request they will see why it's such a good idea.

But I have found often librarians have a bunch of money they need to
spend and when they have run out of the stuff they know about they are
often open to suggestion.

I was about to say to watch out for DVD Region incompatability (NZ is, with
Australia and South America, Region 4) - however, according to a question &
answer on this page:

blogs/editors-blog/watch-the-woodwrights-shop-for-less
I see that they are DVDs produced "NTSC for All Regions".

Re: St Roy
No need to purchase the sets or go to the library to get the discs...you
can just sit in your pj's sip your coffee, and watch...unless you're still
on dial up
You can watch all the episodes online...Go to PBS or better yet, just
google it.
I just checked and you can watch 129 different episodes (free). I'm not
sure how far back they go.
It is a major time waster though. I went to check if they were still
available and I ended up watching an episode instead of doing my chores,
dahmnit!
I just watched a saw making video....

BTW, some episodes are available on uTube, but I don't know if these are
the same or older
Cheers

Most libraries are responsive to patron requests. My library has gotten many
videos and books after receiving a "purchase suggestion". They've turned down a
few, but usually if you wait 6 months to a year and resubmit they'll end up
buying it. In case you weren't aware, you can also use Interlibrary Loan to get
your hands on out of print tools books, catalogs, etc. I used Interlibrary Loan
to view PTAMPIA, the Stanley guide, Smith's key, a few of Ken Robert's
books...the list goes on... The only down side is that they must be returned
when the loan period expires. Ben

It doesn't matter for New Zealand anyway as you're not allowed to sell
DVD players that only play zone 4, they must be able to play all zones.

Internet video is OK, but not so much on a laptop. DVD means for me
bigger screen, better sound, pause and repeat more easily among other
things.
