254137 Michael Filler 2015‑03‑28 Spoon, pen, and galoot-a-hauls
Tom, very nice work!  That is some very pretty maple, and I also 2nd the kudos
on the photo (what kind of light source?).  How about a picture of the tools
used on the spoon?

I'm envious of those back east, with great tool meets.  We don't seem to get
them in Chicago with any regularity.  Nice haul.  I like the 1903 inside-outside
ruled caliper, interested in who made it, what the target market was.  Certainly
different!

I was out in the shop briefly today, the air pump for the fish pond crapped out
(again).  It uses stiff rubber diaphrams, and they split about every 6-9 months.
I usually keep spares on-hand, but could not locate them, but Amazon obliged for
$9 a pair.  I need to find bedrock as well, every horizontal surface is a foot
deep in "stuff".  Can't wait til it warms a bit more.

Cheers.

The light source on the photo was natural light from a window. Nothing fancy.

Here is a photo of the tools used on the bowl of the spoon.

The two rasps are a Nicholson cabinetmakers rasp and a cheap rasp from Harbor
Freight. I bought the latter when I realized that the teeth were in an irregular
pattern and that it was coarser than my Nicholson. The two big gouges were
recently disgorged from my Box O' Unsharpened Chisels and fettled. I've had the
gooseneck scraper for some time but it has come into its own on the spoons.

Best regards,
Tom

Oo, Oo, tell us about that knob handle on the Nicholson. Designed and sold for
that, or something cobbled together from something?

Never thought about the irregularity on an el cheapo. I’ll have to give it a
try.

The rasp knob handle is available from Lee Valley. I recommend it.
