254133 Anthony Seo <tonyseo@p...> 2015‑03‑28 Spring 2015 Brown Tool Auction Dealer Sale
"What are you doing here?" That seemed to be the question of the day as
I made a quick run down to the spring Brown Tool Auction dealer sale in
Camp Hill PA yesterday. Which I guess was warranted as this was the
first one that I have been down to (spring and fall) in a few years.
But I came, I saw, I bought.

Had a Tony Z sighting, Bill Weber and his lovely were there, as well as
Walt and Mary Henderson.

The sales floor was reasonably full, with most of the usual suspects
being present. I was waiting at one table to complete a purchase when a
guy comes up and starts asking about center point bits. I said that it
wasn't my table and he said that he knew, he wanted to know if I had any
at my table.... Nice to be remembered eh?

This is a shot of the auction area but I didn't go in.

http:

Pickings were good for what I was looking for and wanting to spend.
Number of chisels and a few chip carving knives. The square in the
upper right corner is a Charles Smith patent, Pat. No. 760,031 granted
on May 17, 1904.

Couple neat items here here, the brace is a Stanley X-3 6 inch sweep,
that needs some attention but well worth the price of admission. The
thing with the 2 legs and wing nut is marked Pat 1903 and the legs are
ruled on one side. That will take some research and some cleaning but it
is different.

All in all I was pretty happy with the pile. Then it was on the road
and on the run back to the shop. Of course, this time of year, I-81
looks like the A-10 Warthogs out of Fort Indiantown Gap, have been using
it for carpet bombing practice. But you will have this.

Daughter and I had a Tony Seo sighting-gabbed for a bit about prices! Got a
steel Stanley block for the new Grandsons (one is 1 the other is 7 months).
Also got a little anvil (for my anvil accumulation).

Didn't buy much, but won't miss the sales either!

Gracious Galoots.

Yeah, I said that. I should have posted this gloat earlier; last fall
actually. Anyway, last fall, at the dealer show in Camp Hill, I got
hooked up with a dealer who had a tool chest, yadda, yadda... To make a
long story short, as they say, I went to visit, liked what I saw, and
made the purchase. At the show last week I added a few more nice
things; a set of planes in a box and the deceased planemakers tools. I
have been having trouble with my camera phone. I don't know why some of
the pics came out in black and white. Oh well, enjoy.

Hi Ed,

Generally, yes. But lots of 'eras'. The planes in the boxed set are
relatively new; made over the last 10 to 15 years. The tools in the
"planemakers tools", some are obviously relatively new, and others are
older, like Buck Bros, Sorby, Marples, and Barton. The tools in the
chest are too numerous to list but, for example, some of the saws are
Disston, Disston and Son, and Disston and Sons. So the date range is
quite large.

Bill W.

It appears Bill, that your spending was far in excess of my spending, thus
keeping in balance equilibrium in the world of the efficient "old tool dollar
economy". My youngest daughter, as typical, was with me. Not typical, was the
Mrs. Tony Z, sitting in the corridor leading to the restrooms, asking "What so-
called treasures did you have to buy today?", as I walked out to leave. "Not
much, didn't really need anything", I replied. "Good" she said, "you have
enough and you're learning that you do".

Fooled that woman! Now she won't examine me so closely at my future tool
forays. Oh, and buy the way, I did have a "minty" steel Stanley block plane
hidden in my jacket pocket (for the new grandsons), as well as a tiny anvil. My
daughter remained quiet, giving me a knowing look behind her mother's back.

Well, the money exchanged at this event was far less than you are
imagining. Most money left our account last fall with the acquisition
of the tool chest. As with Mrs. Z, MLW spent most of the show time
patiently guarding the hotel corridors. Fortunately for me, she
supports my pursuits, generally.

I'm disappointed in the lack galooterati enthusiasm for my new/old tool
chest. Here are a couple more pics.

That is a beautiful chest and collection of tools. As to enthusiasm, it may have
been tempered by the fact that you sent it on April 1 -- even the links are
labeled April 1. Then there is the black & white photos. Just sayin'.

When I walked out of the show to where the Mrs. Z was waiting, she said the
smile on my face was greater than the smile on our wedding day of some 36 years
ago. Naturally I said I was just happy to see her.

bill,

given that came on april 1, caution in belief was probably the watchword.

but, damn, that's beautiful. my enthusiasm is not even tempered by my
envy...many congratulations.

A little slow to the party, but my thoughts *lie* with the others.

Nice attempt at the AFD gag, but I'm not biting.

Perhaps we are having trouble making the transition from rehabbing a
nail set to commenting on this chest.

It is beyond all my dreams of tool acquisition. Which, I guess, means it
is time to rethink those ambitions. Not sure SWMBO is going to be
pleased though.

I am guessing there were more than a few galoots were out looking for new
keyboards preventing the gushing of enthusiasm (caused by a gushing of
drool).

Like Matthew I am way out here in the middle of the country in Missouri. Not
old tools hell, but nowhere close to the promised land of the north east.

That tool chest is beyond my comprehension. I find it difficult to believe such
a treasure could actually exists.

And the plane makers tools. Holy Smoley!!!

Even assuming that Bill is pulling our legs across 1500 miles of distance that
chest and other tools exist somewhere and I’m still amazed.

Well, Bill, the B&W pics left me in mixed moods, wondering was this an April
Fool’s stunt to add to the plethora of AF items issued this season, or something
real? The color photos tend to dismiss that interpretation, now leaving me in
mild shock at this gloat, and since my arms are turning green I probably don’t
want to look in the mirror. Wow. Gorgeous stuff, would have added a few more
tools at hand in my shop as I contemplate making at least one woodie and maybe
more. Lessee, just where is your home now? Nottingham? Is that the
Nottingham just a few miles northwest of me? What do you do between midnight
and 6am? ….. hmmmm. Too bad I don’t think that chest would fit in the car
without help from accomplices …. are any others on the Porch having similar
inappropriate thoughts? Yeah, I thought they were. Shock and Awe … it worked
in Iraq.

Nice score!

Gracious Galoots,

OK, I admit, I was trying to have some fun with the pictures. I wasn't
sure where it would go as I hadn't completely thought it out. April
Fools only comes once a year, and though poorly thought out, I didn't
want to wait. The chest is a wonderfully accurate reproduction of
Duncan Phyfe's tool chest. It is perfect in every detail, from the
crotch mahogany saw till on the lid, to the brass trolleys on the main
till, to the ivory pulls on the veneered drawers. The only variation of
consequence that I can see is that the saw till on the lid holds six
saws, whereas the original holds only four. The chest was made by
Robert Soule. I didn't know him or know of him prior to getting
interested in the chest. Perhaps some of you knew him. He was a
prolific toolmaker. The following was extracted from his obituary and
other sources.

"Robert M. Soule passed away on March 29, 2014.He was 93.He was born in
New Haven, Conn. on October 31, 1921.He served in WWII in the 58th
Fighter Group of the 5th Air Force in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch East
Indies, Philippines and Okinawa. He was a cabinet maker at Yale
University and curator of the Garvin early American furniture collection
and in charge of all the exhibits there. He retired after 30 years as
superintendent of the Yale University Art Gallery.

He was an expert restorer of antique tools and maker of reproductions
and a member of the Antique Tools and Trade in CT (ATTIC).He was often
called on for his reproduction skills to make repairs to fine and unique
antique hand tools. He often made copies of these antiques for his own
use and the chest contains examples of his work. The tools in the chest
(backsaws, carving chisels, and miscellaneous) are of a similar type as
used by Duncan Phyfe."

For Kirk, doubting T, and others, here is another picture. Notice I've
rearranged the tools. Folks that know me understand I'm partial to
bright and shiny.

Here's the chest in its new home, not a museum. That is my Yuppie
Workbench in the foreground for those that remember it. It is hard to
believe that bench is nearly 13 years old.

Bill:

The chest and the kit are both astounding and lovely; thanks for sharing.
It is hardly urgent, as I have plenty of items already on the Wanna Make
(or at least Wanna Ogle) list, but if you have a chance... I wouldn't mind
a closer look at that marking gauge that sits just in front of the shoulder
planes on the right in this pic:

SNIP Not typical, was the Mrs. Tony Z, sitting in the corridor leading to
the restrooms, asking "What so-called treasures did you have to buy today?",
as I walked out to leave. "Not much, didn't really need anything", I
replied. "Good" she said, "you have enough and you're learning that you
do". Fooled that woman! Now she won't examine me so closely at my future
tool forays. END SNIP

Indeed Tony, old darling, it is always a major tactical error to take the
other half to either tool or gun sales events. However, nothing compares to
the unexpected adjustment I had to make when I moved to a home office. Now
everything comes in the front door, usually after the delivery person rings
the bell. Horrors!
