There is an interesting article on the TATHS site about the use of heel 
or heeled tools for turning brass on a foot-powered lathe.

I know very little about metal work, and hadn't heard of these tools

WOW!! You have no idea how much I appreciate this information. I do brass
turning in my wood lathe, but it isn’t easy. Very soon I will have similar tools
to try out. I can hardly wait. Besides, now I have more tools to make.

Loving this, I've got a few little brass bits that need making and the file
method is not cutting it (no pun etc.)

Looking forward brass chips on the floor around the lathe.
