253147 Gary Katsanis <gtgrouch@r...> 2015‑01‑25 Fwd: a day (or three) at the olive maul
Mike emerged from under the porch to share a project that would provide
me (at least!) with some
satisfaction. However, he had some trouble with checking.

Mike, I would go ahead and use your maul; see how it works for you. I
have one similar but smaller
of indeterminate species with major checking in it. My kids called it
my 'knocker stick,' carefully
enunciating the leading 'k' when they did so. It works just fine.

I don't want to go out on a limb - pun intended - but I would guess that
there is more of a problem
using side grain rather than end grain than there is a problem with
checking in your maul. Except
for very hard wood, I've found that side grain doesn't hold up well
under impact. The problem is
most pronounced for me when I'm hitting metal, such as my froe.

Nice project! Gary Katsanis

I was exhausted so glut production will have to wait for another
weekend. But I felt a small glimmer of
accomplishment. A few days later I went out to the gara-shop to admire
my work Darn, it checked all
over the place. Back to square one.
