252410 galoot@l... 2014‑12‑20 wood source? Pgh Pa area
Gentle galoots,

My sis in the Pittsburgh region is interested in a small furniture
project and lookig for lumber she can bring when she visits since my
soure will be closed when she comes and we would like more playtime.

Anyone care to recommend a source of 4/4 2 sides smooth? She is
somewhat flexible on species.

She is currently near Steubenville, works in Beaver but in 2 week plant
shutdown, and lived for years in Hampton Twp. We were raised in
central Westmoreland county, anthing near any of the above, she has a
GPS...

Thank you!

Esther

Hi, Esther,
If she is in Steubenville and doesn't mind a bit of a drive, Frank Miller in
Eastern Indiana is a good option.
In the Pittsburgh area, a lot of the local woodworkers go to Mars Lumber for a
commercial lumber dealer.  HP Starr is a building supply that has a little
hardwood.  There is another hardwood dealer in Elizabeth.
If she can "preorder" the lumber, there is a commercial lumber dealer in Dunbar
who is a member of the local club, delivers to Pittsburgh and is probably the
best bet for quality and price.  He delivers to the shop in East Liberty where
the club meets and the shop owner would probably store it for her temporarily if
we asked him.
If she is looking for through and through private bandmill air dried stuff, a
good friend in North Hills has a band mill and usually has stock on hand -
cherry, oak, poplar, walnut, and usually charges $1 to $3 a board foot.  It is
roughsawn, not sure if he has a planer but he might.
What quantities are we talking about?  She is welcome to borrow my portable
tailed demon  to surface the rough sawn if
she wants to go that route, or I would be happy to plane it for her.
If any of this sounds interesting, let me know and I will get you the contact
details.
Hope this helps.
