252366 Ken Shepard <waruba@c...> 2014‑12‑17 Made a backsaw
I made a backsaw using a drywall knife for the blade, carbon fiber
composite for the back, and black walnut for the handle.

Here is a photo of the completed saw:

Pretty impressive! Looks like it's doing a nice job for you already. What
are your thoughts about the steel as far as sharpening, workability, etc.?

Its A Beauty

Thanks for sharing the process steps. Makes it look easy.

Yeah right. Makes it look do able.

The saw looks great!

Why did you use a carbon fiber back?

It seems like it would be very stiff, but also very light. Isn't stiff
and heavy what you want?

Thanks,
Chris

252374 Ken Shepard <waruba@c...> 2014‑12‑18 Re: Made a backsaw
David,

I don't recall where I got the idea for using a drywall knife for a saw
blade - somewhere online, it is not my original idea. As far as
sharpening, it seems pretty much the same as my other dovetail saws ranging
from old English to Lie Nielsen. With this thin stock and small teeth, the
problem is maintaining a light touch and not overdoing it.

252375 Ken Shepard <waruba@c...> 2014‑12‑18 Re: Made a backsaw
Kirk,

It really is not that difficult. The hardest part is the handle, and the
trickiest part of the handle is sawing the slot for the blade. This
technique can be used with brass or any other material.

252376 Ken Shepard <waruba@c...> 2014‑12‑18 Re: Made a backsaw
Chris,

The carbon back was an experiment. I know that stiff and heavy is
conventional wisdom, but I wanted to try stiff and light. And I happened
to have the carbon composite laying around. Carbon fiber is stiffer than
steel, but much lighter. I haven't used the saw much except for a few test
cuts, but I intend to try it for dovetails soon. Just from the test cuts,
I like it.

Is that a Lunn saw you are using to cut the slot in the handle? It has a sexy
tote. Nice work. I am anxious to hear how that steel holds a sharpening.
Update us when you put it through its paces.

Brent,

No, that is a former Crown gent's dovetail saw, the first saw I bought many
years ago after reading a positive review in FWW. I used it once or twice,
hated it, and put it in a drawer where it lay until I found it while
cleaning up and reorganizing the shop last year. I cut the handle off and
made the new handle you see, then re-toothed it to 15 ppi. It is a great
little saw now. I have some before and after photos, but I can't seem to
locate them.

You made a beautiful handle for it. Completely changed the look, and I'm sure,
the handling of the saw.
