I made a backsaw using a drywall knife for the blade, carbon fiber composite for the back, and black walnut for the handle. Here is a photo of the completed saw: http://kshepard.smugmug.com/Woodworking/Backsaw/i-fN4KCm7/0/L/Backsaw%2 0%2822%20of%2023%29-L.jpg">http://kshepard.smugmug.com/Woodworking/Backsaw/i-fN4 KCm7/0/L/Backsaw%20%2822%20of%2023%29-L.jpg or http://tinyurl.com/pkeahgw And here is a gallery showing the construction steps: http://kshepard.smugmu g.com/Woodworking/Backsaw or http://tinyurl.com/qy3u9an Ken Shepard |

Pretty impressive! Looks like it's doing a nice job for you already. What are your thoughts about the steel as far as sharpening, workability, etc.? David in Sunbury, Oh. On Wed, Dec 17, 2014 at 2:49 PM, Ken Shepard |

Ken The saw looks great! Why did you use a carbon fiber back? It seems like it would be very stiff, but also very light. Isn't stiff and heavy what you want? Thanks, Chris On Wed, Dec 17, 2014 at 2:49 PM, Ken Shepard |

David, I don't recall where I got the idea for using a drywall knife for a saw blade - somewhere online, it is not my original idea. As far as sharpening, it seems pretty much the same as my other dovetail saws ranging from old English to Lie Nielsen. With this thin stock and small teeth, the problem is maintaining a light touch and not overdoing it. Ken On Wed, Dec 17, 2014 at 4:15 PM, David Linnabary |

Kirk, It really is not that difficult. The hardest part is the handle, and the trickiest part of the handle is sawing the slot for the blade. This technique can be used with brass or any other material. Ken On Wed, Dec 17, 2014 at 4:28 PM, Kirk Eppler |

Chris, The carbon back was an experiment. I know that stiff and heavy is conventional wisdom, but I wanted to try stiff and light. And I happened to have the carbon composite laying around. Carbon fiber is stiffer than steel, but much lighter. I haven't used the saw much except for a few test cuts, but I intend to try it for dovetails soon. Just from the test cuts, I like it. Is that a Lunn saw you are using to cut the slot in the handle? It has a sexy tote. Nice work. I am anxious to hear how that steel holds a sharpening. Update us when you put it through its paces. Sent from my iPad On Dec 17, 2014, at 1:49 PM, Ken Shepard |

Brent, No, that is a former Crown gent's dovetail saw, the first saw I bought many years ago after reading a positive review in FWW. I used it once or twice, hated it, and put it in a drawer where it lay until I found it while cleaning up and reorganizing the shop last year. I cut the handle off and made the new handle you see, then re-toothed it to 15 ppi. It is a great little saw now. I have some before and after photos, but I can't seem to locate them. You made a beautiful handle for it. Completely changed the look, and I'm sure, the handling of the saw. Sent from my iPad On Dec 17, 2014, at 8:54 PM, Ken Shepard |
