The Stanley #48 caught my eye first. I like the Stanley #45 that I got a few
years ago. The multiple adjustments and attachments are difficult to master but
when it works it’s cool.
The 48 is a different order of magnitude. It comes stock with 3 blades. Mine has
one but the clamp screws are there and the fence works. At $7.65 it jumped into
my hand.
The eggbeater drill is still awaiting the cleaning process. I have several but
this one will be the first with all the parts in place. Bottom feeding has it’s
drawbacks. I spent a whole $11.25 on it.
The TH Witherby chisel was pounded hard. Fortunately I like the process of
repairing the socket on these old chisels. I spent a nice hour this afternoon
flattening the back on the chisel and reshaping the bevel. It’s a sign of the
itch that the smashed socket didn’t bother me but the $3.15 price tag did.
The PS&W Co No. 1 Extra chisel was a puzzle. I could only see the P and the O
with a faint hint of the No. 1. The Extra was clear and the wavy edge box helped
me identify the trademark after a brief Google search. Careful work on the anvil
took a curve out of the blade.  Flattening and a lick and a promise at cleaning
took about 20 minutes. After cleaning the little chisel started to look more
like a chisel than a paint stirrer. The $2.50 it cost came out of pocket change
so no harm done.

For $7.65? Congrudgulations. Those are about the
easiest possible blades to make, too.
