Found on the Gutenberg Project:

Woodworking for Beginners

It's has a great deal of old information and explanations, including the
preparation, use, and storage of lead paint. Apart from gems like that it
contains the methods for cutting a great deal of joinery, the use of a
great many tools, and some very Galootish techniques and opinions. I've
enjoyed this book and have found a few others on the Gutenberg Projects
including books on French Polishing, hand work, hand tools from 1600-1900,
and half a dozen others. I don't know if this is ew to the group or not,
but it's a nice resources, especially since the books are available in
Kindle, EPub, and HTML format.

Yes, a very good book. I downloaded it a few years back. It
certainly puts the lie to the idea that amateur woodworking starts
with the tailed apprentice. I pick up books like this when I
find them -- probably have a dozen or so. "It's Fun to Make It
Yourself" is another. (That one has a photo of Maxfield Parrish
at his work bench.)
