had a few ducks fly in to roost today..

First up - Luckhaus & Gunther rebate - from the scarce amount of info I have
found to date, no later than 1941 I believe….if anyone can elaborate, I’d be
grateful.

Next, H. Mueller Spiral Screwdriver…July 1889 Patent

alas the bits are not original, but fit well and will make the tool quite useful
I think..

Finally, J.W. Jones 1892 Patent Reversible Spiral…. the first to be patented I
believe (patent #470055), according to Clifford Fales' brilliant site..

..just need the 1892 Howard and 1874 Allard to go with them…. …could be a long
wait, especially for the Allard :-)

…mind you I thought I’d got myself an S.F. Bowser this week, but the vendor
had already sold it and not updated the damned page ….!

Malcolm,

Does the H. Mueller spiral tool accept standard bitstock tools, or are those
smaller than what would be used with a common brace?

If they are standard, I am surprised that the tool never "caught on", as it
seems just about ideal for use with a countersink or a bitstock-headed twist
drill.

Then again, for all I know, H. Mueller tools might be common in Australia.

hi,
they look a tad smaller, but it is a question i want answered too...so once the
days chores are done and i can get into the shed, we'll both have our answer !

if they do fit, then why this one didn't catch on?

my guess is the absence of the free-spinning collar at the bit end of the spiral
shaft made this particular model a bit awkward to use. odd, as the earlier
model, based on the same patent had it ....

Mal

John,

Yes the bits appear to be standard bit stock and fit in all my braces. In actual
fact they are more suited to a brace than a tool such as this. The reamer,
countersink and larger drill bits are far too much of a challenge for the
Mueller; even in soft pine.

Apart from standard screwdriver bits I am not sure what others would have been
sold or used with the Mueller, certainly not these.

So there we have it, asked and answered :-)
