250416 "Ken Cournoyer" <kencou@c...> 2014‑09‑15 Looking for information
I can across this hand plane and am looking for any information regarding
its maker and or if it has any value.

I think it is missing a wooden wedge.

Looks like it could be an old A. Mathieson infill plane.

The iron does say Alex Mathieson. I just assumed it was the iron maker.

250422 Brian Rytel <brian.rytel@g...> 2014‑09‑15 Re: Looking for information
This is a wedged infill not a screw-cap style. The blade is missing
it's cap iron as well. The wood wedge should go between the brass cap
and the iron, not between the iron and the frog. Given the condition
it's just as reasonable to assume the plane isn't from the same mfg.
as the iron.

It's a bit hard to tell from the photos, but the wood wedge doesn't
look 'right' to me. Usually they're longer or have a little 'bun' atop
to keep the from sliding under the pivoting cap. Perhaps it's just
mislead because the cap iron is missing and the wedge sits ~50% too
low in the photos.

Nice plane, it'll clean up really nicely!

250424 CheekyGeek <cheekygeek@g...> 2014‑09‑15 Re: Looking for information
There appears to be some lettering inside the brass adjustment knob. Can't
make out what it says in the photos though. Might be a clue.
250428 Peter McBride <peter_mcbride@b...> 2014‑09‑16 Re: Looking for information
Ken,
you are right, only the iron is by Mathieson. The plane is nothing like
any properly marked Mathieson plane I own, I've sold, seen personally or
just viewed in pictures.
The body has some similar design "keys" to commercial makers, but the
finish, and woodwork are of a standard more like a user made plane.
