Anybody made their own coffin yet? I am hoping to be a couple of decades
ahead of schedule, but when the time comes, I want to be buried in a box
that I made. I would love to see pics, if you have done this. Thanks.

Nope, not yet. Probably someday, though. Mentioned the idea to my
wife, though, a few months ago. She though it was creepy.

GG,

I fully intend to do this. Gotta cut me a big yellow pine clear with no
knots, I do not want to spend eternity with knots. My father told me of
the old ones making their own coffins and keeping them in the barn lofts.

GG's

Yankee Magazine once had a humorous short story about a fellow who built his own
coffin from plans for a combination bookcase/coffin. The idea was that when the
time came, the shelves would come out and there's your coffin. The lid was
somehow fastened to the back of the bookcase, ready to be relocated to the front
for coffin use.

The story included the man's wife being horrified to have this morbid piece of
furniture in their home.

You, sir, have given me a great idea. I have plenty of Poe and Lovecraft and
Charles Addams to create just such a device.....

And the results shall be the same: my girlfriend will be appalled. And I giddy
at the thought.

In days of old, when knights were bold and..........
Well you know the rest!
Years ago, I went to an auction in Dushore, Pennsylvania,
it was the storerooms and outbuildings of a long defunct Victorian store.
They had an unused Victorian walnut coffin, untouched for over 100
years! It had white lace up where the head would go and
all the old hardware. As I recall it sold for $225.00, I was often
sorry I didn't bid on it. It would have cleaned up nicely.
Just some of my Proustian memories.
