I know there have been similar threads in the past, but this has a twist. I think I am going to be given the opportunity to teach some hand tool use at the ultimate basic level to some kids attending an alternative high school in my community. I want to help them get a little bit of self sufficiency. I thought our first project could be a tool tote. What tools should be in it? I am thinking of a pine tote 30 inches long or thereabouts. If we get to do this thing, do you think We could get some tools donated? I Think they should have a number 4 plane, but We will need 8 to ten of em, and I cannot fund it by myself. Would you get the Stanley 20 inch hard tooth saws at the borg? Gonna need chisels, and squares, hammers, some kind of honing method. Eggbeater drill, or brace? Lots of questions. Ron. Ron, If you are doing this training under the umbrella of a 501c entity, your local Borg will likely donate some product if a request is made on the 501c's letterhead. It would be worth while to have a chat with the store manager. Tim Helping my 13 year old work on his Woodworking merit badge today. Good time in the shop. On Aug 27, 2014 3:30 PM, "Ron Harper" |

Figure out what goes in the toolbox before dimensioning it! Depending on the age/size of the kids, they might be better with No.3s. Don't buy a saw the kids can't eventually sharpen. Better to teach them to make a simple saw vise & etc. Look for corporate donations of files, screwdrivers, clamps, squares, hammers, chisels & combination hones. Those are all still in general use, and should be an easy donation for the Borg or other similar source. Braces, not eggbeaters because braces can make big holes and small, the chucks are generally more forgiving, it's easier to get angular control with them, and there are lots of old ones to be had in workable condition. A few years back, Sam Peterson a galoot from here in Columbia did a boy scout merit badge program for a few years when his boys were in scouts. The project was to build a small toolbox to hold a set of tools that were provided. Many of us Galoots provided tools from our surplus stashes. There have to be plenty of notes in the archives concerning the kinds of tools he put together. I saw a couple of the tool boxes, and they were very appropriate for a 8-12 year old youngster to get started in woodworking. Having the tool box helped them keep everything together in one place and gave them the sense that this was THEIR set of tools. But, Sam is no longer here in Columbia, and I don't know if he still reads oldtools. He took a job way out in the Florida Keys (Key West I think), where I am sure he is getting in a lot more water activity than we have around here. Nice climate too. --Scott On Aug 27, 2014, at 2:30 PM, Ron Harper |
