249629 Champ Herren <champherren3@g...> 2014‑08‑01 Whatsit?
GG,

http://flic.kr/p/ogaaJW

It is labeled a "stove hammer". It is some type of adze, but I cannot find
a reference in my usual printed sources. Thoughts about usage or proper
name?

A friend had it in their booth and was asking $35.

That is a cooper's adze.

That is about the going rate for one in decent condition. I passed
on one at the flea this weekend for $15. The body and handle were
good but the steel bit was down to the last 1/8" of life...sigh

I've seem some silly identifications, but "stove hammer?!"
And why would anyone need a hammer for a stove, anyway?

Tony's got it -- just about the definitive example of a cooper's adz.
A little more specific, an English or American cooper's adz. Those
used on the Continent share the curve and short handle, but are
otherwise
rather different.
