249626 Larry Holland <menlofarm@m...> 2014‑08‑01 Mount fiberglass handle
Galoots,

While visiting one of my woodworking buddies this morning, he brought out a
number of edge tools that need to be re-handled. A sledgehammer, 2 splitting
mauls, a double bitted axe head and couple hammers. I do a lot of that kind of
work, and enjoy it. But, he also gave me a fiberglass handle that he wants me
to put on one of the splitting mauls. I’ve never done fiberglass handles, and
don’t have a clue.

My initial idea was to cut a kerf down the center, then treat it just like a
wood handle, but have decided to err on the side of caution and submit it to the
wisdom of the group.

Any help greatly appreciated

Larry-

I did that - once. Not a fan of fiberglass handles. Seems like the kit
came with epoxy and the head was glued to the shaft. IIRC, there was a
groove around the handle where it fit in the head to give the epoxy a
locking notch after it hardened. Here's an example how-to-

There are a number of them on the web.

I guess in light of today's experience; save the broken handles! ;-)

Like Sheriff Buford T. Justice said "You can think about it but DON'T
you do it."

It's fiberglass not wood. My guess is that you will set up a stress
fracture that will propagate through the handle in not to long.
Use an epoxy.

Later on when it fails, as all handles do, you can remove the epoxy by
soaking the ax head in boiling water.
It won't remove it, but it'll soften it so you can scrap it away easily

Larry

I have a sledge and a mattocks with fiberglass handles. Neither shows
signs of a kerf or wedge, just a wad of epoxy visible on top.

Both have a rubber gasket thing under the head, butting up against a
shoulder on the handle
