They had vast resources in the west coast mediteranean climate, and 
developed a sophisticated woodworking technology.
It has to be seen close up to really appreaciate it.

Indeed.  At Williamsburg, they have a corner cupboard with
a triangular drawer with the sharp corner flattened a bit
that is done the same way, all one piece, with the 2 sides
dovetailed into the drawer face.  Really wonderful.

Also, at the Smithsonian American History Museum, they have
a hollowed out log canoe that is 7 feet across and 65 feet
long - all one log.  Quite a bit of adze work in that guy,
even given that they burned away a lot of the interior.
