A fascinating thread regarding the making of a rifle stock, using hand 
tools (well he did drill a couple of holes with a tailed drill) that 
also covers building the complete rifle.  Barreling the action did 
involve a couple of junk lathes.

That is a Sargent No. 600 Aluminum Smooth Plane.   Sears sold a ton 
of them under the Craftsman label and the Sargent marked ones aren't 
that common.
