Might be looking at one tomorrow.

The dude wants $60 is that reasonable?

Anything to look out for? I'd appreciate any comments.

Cheers!

Adrian is Lion hunting...

That's a fair price assuming it has all its pieces, which are few. You
may need to get the blades resharpened sooner or later.

Adrian, That's about half price for a working lion trimmer or clone.
Look for bad nicks in the blade, they charge extra to sharpen those.
Make sure that the adjustable fences hold firmly and don't slip. IMHO it
would have to be broken and unusable for me to pass on it at $60.

Good luck. Wes

Several people on this thread mentioned having Lion sharpen the
blades. Usually you guys say, "Do it yourself!" Is there some reason
the blades must be sharpened by Lion?

It's more of the fact that it's a pain to grind them because of the size
and scale of the work. If you need to grind a nick out of the bevel it's
a tremendous amount of steel to remove. Really the only way to do it is
with a horizontal grinder, something like what folks use to sharpen
power planer and jointer blades. If you have something like the Makita
horizontal wet grinder it makes grinding and honing these big blades a
cinch. Josh

Well this is kind of embarrassing but the guy sold it to someone else.

I sent the guy an email Saturday asking for an appointment, Sunday the ad is
relisted with the price dropped to $50.

Ha, ha I thought but immediately realized such good fortune doesn't usually
happen to me.

Sure 'nuf, Monday afternoon get an email saying it has been sold.

Not sure whether to be happy or sad. I don't really need the thing and
truth be told was more looking forward to cleaning, de-rusting, painting and
oiling than actually using.

What is it with that - am I trying to cleanse my soul of past misdeeds?

I don't normally like to do the dishes, for instance, but I love cleaning up
old arn.

Anyways, mucho thanks to the kind people who replied to this thread.

Yeah, on the subject of sharpening, I've read that the blades have to be
super, super sharp.

Even if you could rig up a jig for the sandpaper-on-plate-glass method, the
paper rises ever so slightly.

Not something you would notice sharpening a chisel or plane iron.

Cheers!

My only regrets are the tools I didn't buy. I enjoy restoring them to
usefulness, just as you do.

When I restore an old tool, I get something out of it... A tool. When I do art
projects, I actually get nothing out of it, because I don't care about the
finished items. I only get enjoyment from the doing, and not from the finished
items. I have only a very few of these things that I actually treasure.

You will atone for your past misdeeds, and one of these days a princess in the
form of a frog will ask you to kiss her. Then you'll be off to the races again.
