23322 Peter Ostrin <petero@p...> Aug-04-1997 Optical finishing powder?

GGs

So I got up bright and early Saturday morning to try score at the the
local flea market. I was not all that lucky (last month was much better),
probably some Bay Area Galoots got there before 6:30am :-)
Anyway, just as I am about to gather up swmbo, sweating under the weight
of the "junk" she likes to buy and I have to carry, I spotted a red
carboard box, old looking, hiding under a table laden with quality stuff.
I offered a couple of dollars and the nice old lady agreed.

So what I have here is a set of "Optical Finishing Powder" by Carborundum.
There are 8 little bottles in a original red carboard box, each filled with
powder. The bottles are each marked Aluminum Oxide and the lables are
stamped 220-TP, 280-W, 320-W, 400-W, 600-W, F-W, FF-W, FFF-W. The powers
range in color from grayish-brown through light-gray.

My questions, worthy porch-sitters:

1) The powers seem much finer than I would expect compared to 220 grit
AO SS paper. Is "Optical Finish Powder" not regular abrasive compound,
and does it not follow the same grits?

2) What are the F-W, FF-W and FFF-W compounds used for? Are they finer
than the numbered ones? (They seem to be). The Carborundum corp's
web site seems to be obssessed with Boron Nitride and its highly
normesk applications. No mention of the old stuff.

3) How do I use it? I ordered a blademaster hone a while back
(potential ups strike has held up shipment). I notice that this
comes with 150&400 grit Silicon Carbide and 8000 grit AO. Is
this stuff I got compatible?

Sorry for all the questions, but wheres a chap to turn?

Thanks

peter
