232558 Joshua Clark <jclark@h...> Aug-21-2012 Matt Bickford's New Book
Well, now that we all know that David's check arrived..

I received my copy of Matt Bickford's book "Moulding Planes in Practice"
today. I skimmed through a few chapters tonight and think it's going to
be a really useful book. I've been looking forward to this book for a
long time, particularly for the section where he analyzes moldings from
period pieces and lays out how they can be cut with hollows and rounds.
Maybe this weekend I'll have some more time to sit down with it. It
seems like a unique book and is sure to cause a lot of interest in
molding planes, though Matt doesn't seem to be very keen on both complex
molding planes and vintage molding planes which he seems to think of as
time sinks. He freely admits he isn't the man to discuss restoring
vintage planes, which leaves the door open for others to pick up that
baton and run with it.

I'm surprised I haven't heard more from the Porch about this book- did
anyone else get a copy?

Sure did=2C last Thursday or Friday=2C I think. I too have been too
busy to sit down for a prolonged read without nodding off late at
night=2C but I've found the first few chapters pretty interesting.
Having used woodies for years and read Matt's blog for some time now=2C
there wasn't much there that I hadn't read or heard before=2C but
skimming the later chapters looks like there's good meat there. And I'm
wondering if I should try boxing the edge of a beater rabbet plane to
see how it goes. -T

Received mine yesterday, and read the intro and skimmed the rest.
The book seems well written, and his approach is methodical
in a way that makes it look easy to break down a complex moulding
into shapes that can be cut out with hollows & rounds (and snipes
bills). I've been missing his blog posts, but I think the book is
better.

Bickford points out that his approach of using chamfers and rabbets
as depth stops isn't necessarily traditional, and he also doesn't
present it as the only way to work. However, St. Roy recommends
using a simpler tool (spokeshave, drawknife, gouge) to waste away
as much wood as possible in order to limit use of the moulding
planes, so I think there's at least some precedent for it.

I expect demand for snipes bills, side rounds, and square rabbets
to rise now. It's unfortunate that he had a bad experience with
vintage planes, though; I think that's still the easiest path to
moulding plane addiction :).

IIRC, using a rabbet plane in a gauge line is also demonstrated by Don
Williams in his making molding DVD. After taking a class from Matt, I
now use this approach in most situations where I cut a rabbet. I also
got one of his boxed 7/8" rabbets after taking the class; sweet.

Got mine a few days ago and have been reading at it. I have periodically read
his blog too but am finding lots of nice tidbits in the book.

Nice tying in the tomatoes with the moulding planes. Next time SWMBO remarks
about all my moldy planes I will point out that she has far more canning jars
and I am looking for parity.

My copy was at the office when I returned from a business trip
yesterday morning (been gone since the 10th). Not much more than a
gentle skim so far but it looks to be a good read.

I received my copy yesterday, read about a third last night. I am
currently building a wall display cabinet and will be making all the
moldings with my H&R's so the timing couldn't have been better.

Seems to me well written and it the exactly what I wished existed 6 years
ago when I first obtained my half set of H&R's. With this book and Don
McConnells "Traditional Molding Techniques: Cornice Moldings" DVD, the
mystery of old school molding is much closer to being solved.

I have all the required planes in my inventory but have neglected to rehab
the pair of side rounds I got a couple of years ago but will be looking at
them this morning with the intentions of having them in service shortly.

I'm not sure what to say about that one.. I have a better pair of

Well at least from the auction photo's that pair looked to be about
as close to mint condition as a molding place of that age can get. I
have watched that seller over the years and his stuff is always top
notch. But like everything else that price was the exception and
looking at his completed listings, some of the prices are pretty
sad. A Robert Wooding (early 18th Century English maker) round only
going for $200 and a few years ago, any thing Wooding was bringing
twice as much.

But that's the way she goes....

As an aside=2C I'd watched the seller for several years as well.Tony is
spot on in saying that his stuff is always top notch.A few years ago I
lamented to him that his stuff was=2C in fact=2C so top notch that there
was no way I could afford it.He replied by offering to sell me an item
similar to the one I'd wanted=2C but that he didn't think warranted
posting=2C because it wasn't up to the standard of the rest of his
auctions. It is still the only infill plane I own and it's a treat to
use... and with a Ward iron to boot.... I can only imagine that the fact
that it's unmarked is what made it unfit for posting.-Ben

I saw these too and they are pretty sweet looking, I really liked the ogee
detail on the blind side, I saved all of the pictures to make copies some
day.

Tony, I love the bourbon:30 line, I snorted out loud at my desk over this,
I'm excited for the bar down the street to open their bourbon bar, only a 5
