GGs; It's what my high school physics teacher (ca. 1962) called the "fun" formula: f=un. Roughly, f is the is the amount of force required to move the object, u (Greek mu) is the coefficient of friction (<1.0, no units), n is the weight of the object. The surface area is not a factor. If the weight were so concentrated that it deformed the surface (causing it to dig in) or destroyed a lubricating boundary layer (changing u), then it would become apples to oranges. As I recall, there was a fair amount of resistance to this concept in the class.
