I realize it is counter-intuitive, but the friction force is independent of
the area of contact and proportional to the weight.  The force is
calculated from laws formulated by Couloumb in 1781.

F = fN

Where F is the friction force, f is the coefficient of friction, and N is
the normal force, e.g. weight of the object.
