Doc, I believe the intuition you have described here is the reason that DaVinci was also so amazed to discover that it wasn't true. More surface area does not add any friction, as the constant force in your example is distributed amongst that much more area. (in this case, lessening it, the force, that is.) Now, what hasn't been pointed out is that these rules (friction correlating not to area, but simply to the force) only apply to non deforming surfaces. Surfaces that deform are another ballgame when contemplating friction.
