Machinery's Handbook 16th ed gives the following values for coefficient 
of friction:

Metals on oak, dry - 0.5 - 0.6
              "        , wet - 0.24 - 0.26
              "        , soapy - 0.2

I'm guessing wax may be a somewhat less effective lubricant that soapy 
water.
