232109 Pghpensfan@a... Aug-02-2012 Out of old tool heaven.....
It's been a while since my last post to the list, but for good reason. Over
the last 6 months I have been busy relocating myself, along with the whole
family from Pittsburgh PA to Apex, NC (a suburb of Raleigh.) Anyone who
has done something similar (moving lock, stock and barrel) understands that
it is quite a process. Anyway, I finally find myself with a little extra
time to go on a tool hunt, but alas, no knowledge of the local hotspots. Any
NC Galoots willing to share their haunts?

Pittsboro is not very far from Apex and is the home of Roy Underhill's
Woodwright's School. Upstairs from the school is the Tool Store with
thousands of user-grade tools.

Oh Oh, I know that one. Back in 2009, drove past when the school was not
in session. Took a few pics (available below), but didn't know there was a
tool store upstairs, seems it was a toy store at the time. Nothing seemed
open at the time I was there though.

I wasn't able to find any old tools on that trip, try tho I might.

Sorry for the poor quality, cell phone pic through a window.......

Howdy Wm.!

Congratulations on your move to Wake County. My family first settled
there in the 1730s. I left in '91; so the area is unknown to me as it
is today.

When we were still there, the state fairgrounds (on Hillsborough Street,
West of Meredith College and the inner loop beltline) was the site of a
weekend flea market. Occasionally there were tools to be found there.
I suspect that pickings might be a little slimmer nowadays but it is
worth a try. IIRC they shut the flea market down in October because
that is when the Dept of Ag presents the state fair.

Slightly west of the fairgrounds on the South side of Hillsborough,
there was a good hardware store but the name escapes me now.

I hope you enjoy your sojourn in Wake County. It grew too big and busy
for me. When I graduated from high school, Cary had about 6000 souls
and apex about 1500 while Raleigh was about 65000.

The MWTCA generally has four meetings per year that are pretty close to
you. Ed Hobbs has one at his place in Raleigh Sept 15 that well worth
checking out. His own collection of peddle powered tools is
really=A0something to see.=A0All types of tools fs from high end to very
reasonable users and good tailgating =A0 Good tools, good people and
good food. =A0 Lamar

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I have already been to the flea at the
fairgrounds, and it is hot and cold with tools, but worth showing up just
in case. Believe it or not, I found my first Stanley No. 203 (small,
non-adjustable block plane, Jeff) there. I will be sure to visit the
Woodwright's
school and store soon, and provide pics to the list. In the mean time, I am
planning a trip back to the Pittsburgh area in mid-August.
