Well Partner,
Asking about fir is kind of like asking about oak.
There are so many kinds and types no real answer can be given.
Some is barely suitable for a chicken coop
and some is fine enough for precision instrumentation.
At the moment I am making trim from VGC (vertical grain clear) like
from the old days. I can't believe I found some still available.
It will take any shape and polish to a lovely surface.
It is simply "house jewelry", about 25 lines per inch.
They sell plantation grown dreck at every Home Despot with 3 rings
per inch. Its contrary and crumbly and shatter prone with monumental
splinters lurking. To run you through.
Tip for your neighborhood???
Antique 5 panel doors as you might find at a recyclers?
Will be old growth Doug fir at a 5 to one ratio.
The salvage wood in these can be worked as you please.
yours Scott
