John asks about the marginal utility of cotonwood lumber.....

No personal experience but SWMBO's cousin runs a mill in Nebraska and
claims they're only good for pallets.
He also related that the quckest way to get water out of them (they
apparenlty have a lot) is to stand them on end - gravity drains a
goodly portion very quickly.

Except for burl and crotch wood used in turnings, I think it is bland.

Pulp and paper manufacture, maybe also plywood cores. In the back woods we had
whole factories devoted to this.
