<snipped>

I mostly use my woodies when im working away from my workshop. They
are much lighter, and hence less of a pain in the neck to transport
using a bike.

I have some old woodies of various types, and 1 modern smoother made by
HBS in europe that has a single iron. I tend to find that the double
iron planes work better, but that might just be me and my incorrect
techniques. The HBS required lots and lots of fettling, and is
reasonably ugly. IMO, vintage ones are so cheap it makes more sense to
just hunt some of them down.

Fwiw I like collecting marples ones. Theyre cheap and they made a lot of
them, and they often turn up fairly unused in the box, which is nice if
you like having lots of cardboard boxes hanging about.

When im working in my workshop I do a fair amount of work in heavy, hard
exotics like rosewoods. I tend to use wooden planes on them for the
roughing out and making flat because they slide along better, and being
a fairly skinny guy, its not so tiring. For smoothing I bounce between
woodies, infills, and bailey types, depending on how the wood feels, how
strong im feeling, and whether or not any of them look like theyre
feeling ignored.

All the best

Rich in london.
