  My Bad!  I thought when you said "shavings in metal are created by abrasive
particles" that you meant to say that's *how* they're created. They're also
created, of course, by very hard and sharp blades, in  processes almost exactly
like those used for working wood.  
  When you write your long-awaited book, consider saying:  "Abrasive particles
create shavings in metal"; while it sounds almost the same, it won't confuse
even a jerk like me. 
  Say, does this mean that abrasives create shavings in wood?  Aieee!
