Andy- I was just pondering the same question while strolling across the wetlands trying to keep up with my griffon (the 75# kind, not the little squished-face kind). Robin Wood uses that set up turning his bowls. He whangs the mandrel in with something that looks like a 2#+ sledge. You can check out his videos here: http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/pole-lathe.htm I didn't see any info on how the mandrel was put together or even a good view of its business end.
