Kirk, thanks for the suggestion.  Here are additional pics.  Note the
lovely mess of gunk (maybe fiberglass or epoxy?) that covers the bottom of
the chest.  Suggestions for removal solicited.  Maybe just leave it alone,
as it's not really visible when the case is upright.  The back is oak
veneer over plywood.  The chest must have sat in some water, as the veneer
is detaching and the back has bowed outwards, with the ply on the bottom
edge completely displaced from the case.
