228985 Dwight Beebe <dwb1124@g...> Apr-14-2012 Simonds model no.?
Afternoon Gs,

I bought a bunch of saws yesterday, mostly dreck, but five or six that will
be nice. One is a Simonds, with a 1922-1926 medallion. When I cleaned the
etch area, the model number that appears seems to be a "6 A" or "5 A".
Does anyone know anything about this model? Brian Welch has an online
catalog from 1919 that does not show this model. There are models 6 and 5,
but nothing that looks like mine. There are also some nice
catalogs/booklets on Simonds on Wiktor's site, but no 5 A or 6 A.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Dwight

I have the 1923 catalog and no #5 or 6 is offered. Could you have a 62? If so,
it will be a skew back.

digits. It also says inside the back cover that they have discontinued the
mfg of hand saws... So maybe the date is later than the copyright date of
1926.

Bill, Kirk, and GGs,

Turns out that the Simonds I have is a No. 371, which seems to be one of
their mid-range saws. Straight back, apple handle. Seems to be in decent
shape, but final derustification will tell. The handle is in nice shape,
the only apology is a slightly chewed lower horn. I'll post pics when I've
finished. Several of the saws are D-23s, mostly rip, some fine (11 tpi),
some not so (6 tpi), while one of D-23s is a 12 tpi crosscut (stamped on
the heel of the blade.)

Dwight

Dwight

>From my pocket catalog.

The Simonds 371 "Blue Ribbon" is a straight back narrow ship saw

"Made from Simonds saw steel. Taper ground blade. Carved applewood
handle. A distinctive high grade saw."

No prices given.
