Last time I was up at Monticello (I really should go more often; it's only 60
minutes from my doorstep), they were just starting that dining room renovation
after having done a bunch of paint research throughout the house. They had
sliced through layers and layers of paint to find the originals and analyzed
them microscopically. You could see several places throughout the house where
there were 1" wide vertical slices crossing wall, crown molding and ceiling. 

I'll have to get back up there to see how the place looks now. It is a really
neat house and grounds. I like it better than Mt. Vernon, although George did
have a fantastic site above the Potomac, with great views of the river.
