If you want an authentic finish choose an oil based paint, simply apply
and let dry and it is done, and period correct.

My buddy Earle and I just finished the oak frame for his 18th century
folding cot, poplar foot and headboard to follow once we receive the
handsewn linen foundation and tack it on. As an aside, today we glued
the frame consisting of side rails, legs, and stretchers and drawbore
pinned all joints with 3/8 oak pegs we made. Amazingly all joints and
the two frames themselves are actually square.

While we await the sailmaker's delivery, we are working on a basswood
dovetailed box that will be insulated and lined with copper and will
serve as an icebox. Both the folding cot and the icebox will be painted
with milk paint, not necessarily the same color.
