206749 "Gary K" <gtgrouch@r...> Jul-30-2010 Rochester NY Area Galoot Get-Together
I can't do all the planning for this. Me and my big mouth! But I can
help, and if we're serious, I bet a group effort would work nicely,
especially since we haven't heard from all the area Galoots yet.

To borrow a phrase from PRINY, I'm centrally isolated: Albion NY on NY Rt 98
a mile north of Rt 31, and a stones-throw from the Erie Canal. I can find
off-street parking for a fair number of people, space to spread out outside,
a couple of porches if it rains, and indoor plumbing. We have a propane
grill (sorry to any purists!).

I would be happy to have people visit here; I would be just as happy to help
put something together at someone else's home.

Depending on the project we pick or the theme we choose, I may have some
materials that the group can work with.

What do you think?

Gary, As Esther and Dave (and people in several other Galoot population
clusters) can attest, it is not essential to have elaborate and pre-
planned "themes" or "projects" to make a Galoot gathering a good time.
For groups that have done this sort of thing on a regular basis for some
years, just gathering to chat (and eat, and drink) can eventually get to
be somewhat redundant. But if there's been a lapse of some period, and
if many of those involved in your area have not yet met face face-to-
face, it's enough to get the local ball rolling just to plan to gather,
urging everyone to bring a tool or three for show and tell, or something
to demo, or whatever what'sits they have lying around, or portable
projects in progress, and so forth. And the consumables can be mostly
pot-luck (or "dish-to-pass" as they say in some parts of the USA).
That's the way the "Central New York" network did it several times back
in the late '90s, and it was always a lot of fun. If the host has a
bench and some scraps of wood handy, Galoot entertainment will follow in
its natural course. There's always time to put more structure into it in
later iterations, if that's what the group finds desirable. For now, to
borrow a phrase from a shoe merchant based close to me in Portland, OR:

I am not now (Nor will I be in a position) to entertain for a while, but I
would be happy to pitch in and help the set-up (Plus I'm a decent cook, and
I'll bring a dish to pass).
Keep me posted.

I am interested. My place won't work for the gathering but I can bring
a dish to pass.

Agreed! But since I'll have a 3 to 4 hour drive, instead of food stuffs,
I'll bring metal thingies (such as carbide, etc.) for dinner favors!).
Should get some sort of agreement on dates, though, I've been traveling
dayam near two weeks a month lately!

All,
It may just be that I am new to Galooting in the area but I would agree
with Tom H that we do not need a planned galoot theme. I would just be
happy to get to know everybody in the area. If we did have to have a theme
I would suggest sharpening because it seems like everyone does it
differently and I love to watch and see what other techniques people have.
I can also be available to set up and bring food. Ignoring the fact I live
in suburbia if I brought over a bunch of people without doing every yard
project I ever mentioned first I think SWMBO would kill me.

For me mid September seems perfect. The weather is usually quite nice (not
too cold or hot) and as the leaves start to turn it reminds me that there is
lumber just waiting to be everywhere...

If everyone would like to avoid chatter on this list for get together
planning I can create an email group for us to use. Thoughts?

Gary,
If you change your mind about hosting the event at your place I could rent
a picnick area at Mendon Ponds. It is a nice area to get a bunch of people
together and being around trees feels galootish.

Bob, Getting a mail list together is a great idea. I copied this to
everyone who responded, 'Me too!' and I arbitrarily included Esther as
well.Could anyone else who is interested send an eMail to Bob? Even if
you think there's only an off-chance that you will be able to come, it's
better to know what's going on.

Mid-September works for me. I'm open to the idea, but my first choice
wouldn't be Mendon. We might be limited in the tools we can bring (I
can't imagine cruising Mendon Ponds Park with an axe in hand) and the
activities we can do there. Also, there's the cost factor, and the
limitations that it might put on our schedule. If it saves travel time
and hassle though, Mendon is a good choice. It's pretty in the fall! I
will talk with SWMBO to see if there are any limitations on our
September schedule; we can check October too if we can't find a closer
date that works for people. But October will start getting a bit cool.

This is beginning to sound like fun!
