204136 "Joe Meyer" <jem1098@p...> 2010‑05‑16 Ilanoy
Anybody got any info on this name/company? It's on the cutter of a jack
plane, only other marking is "#5" ahead of front knob. I searched the
archive, and the only occurence is an unanswered question from march of
2000. I'm hoping someone's uncovered some info since then.

this maybe:

Or maybe not?

END SNIP

Actually, Cliff, I think that site pertains more to the discussion of
knickers.

Bob speaks truth. To which I will add:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=390182185526 Would
indicate that ILANOY was the name of the cheapest line that they offered
with OVB top-of-the-line and Hibbard the 2nd line.

Joe:
IL-A-Noy (Slang for Illinois) was a house brand for the big hardware
company of Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company, Chicago, Illinois.
Started business about 1865. There hardware catalogs ran about 3000 pages.
Some of there other tool brands were O.V..B (Our Very Best), Hibbard, Cruso,
and True Value. One house tool brand was Revenoc, named after John Conover
( Conover spelled backwards). Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett sold out in 1962
to John Cotter & Co., which became True Value Hardware Stores.

Thanks! Not only did you answer my Ilanoy question, now I don't have to ask
the Revenoc one either.

GGs,
Instead of Ilanoy, maybe they should have just called them: "OVW"?

Hee hee.
