Whilst I admire the immaculately finished and over-engineered tools exemplified by Karl Holtey's creations, I also have a sneaking fondness for the results of "I needed to do a job so I made a quick tool" expediency. I've recently encountered two such items, a hacked-from-oak and a blade held by a coach bolt stail engine (seen at a car boot sale) and a lathe whose simplicity can only be terms "majestic", seen at auction. Herewith for the enjoyment of the assembled galooteri: http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10152/stail.jpg http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10152/old_treadl- e_lathe.jpg BugBear ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did either of those beauties follow you home? :) paul womack wrote: > Whilst I admire the immaculately finished and over-engineered tools > exemplified by Karl Holtey's creations, I also have a sneaking > fondness for the results of "I needed to do a job so I made a quick > tool" expediency. > > I've recently encountered two such items, a hacked-from-oak and a > blade held by a coach bolt stail engine (seen at a car boot sale) and > a lathe whose simplicity can only be terms "majestic", seen at > auction. > > Herewith for the enjoyment of the assembled galooteri: > > http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10152/stail.jpg > > http://galootcentral.com/components/cpgalbums/userpics/10152/old_trea- > dle_lathe.jpg > > > BugBear > ------------------------------------------------------------------------

BB, Anti Holtey? Yes..and for a moment flashing through my mind were the reasons that infill planes are a failure of an idea, but wait...put that thought aside. Looking at the stail engine, I see a use for all those blades I can't bring myself to throw away, those getting a bit on the short side, and with the tops mushroomed and bent...anyone need blades for making stail engines?? Paul, did I see a plan for that type of stail engines somewhere with blade angles and such described? Was it one of yours? Although Salaman doesn't distinguish between them, a stail engine, according to the late Fred Lambert, is an adjustable device for tapering a stail. I'd call this a rounder (or rotary plane to speak posh). At the bottom of p 351 he has one rather like the one Paul saw. Having made a few wooden ones, I find it interesting to see that the auctioned router has the blade fixed 'bevel up'. Fred's metal rounders are bedded at 30deg to the tangent and the bevel-down iron is ground at 25deg.
